A Letter from Dr. Josephus Belle

Our fledgling society has made great strides in discovering fantastical mysteries so far. I have chosen you, among our peers, to partake in a joint venture with The Royal Society of Enquiry. The Royal Society of Enquiry, also known as The ROSE, is a Fellowship of the world’s most eminent archeologists, anthropologists, astronomers, historians, scientists and other intellectuals. They are the oldest scientific academies in existence.

This British organization has reached out to us to collaborate in a very exciting opportunity. A newly discovered Assyrian temple complex offers many potentially powerful artifacts for study. By partnering with The ROSE on this expedition, we will gain access to their contacts and resources in the Arabian world. This is The Miskatonic Society’s chance to impress those old, cantankerous Brits. I have faith in each of you to to make this long journey and return safely with historical mysteries for us to delve into.

-Proud of Each of You

Winds of Change – Desert Mirage

All the News Hot Enough to Print!

The testimonies from the deceased starlet Mirella and Amyrka the dancing bear have sealed the fate of Meadowlark’s Travelling Circus! Authorities have not released transcripts of the testimonies but a reliable source states that the evidence was “Quite damning.”

In a related note, Rolendo and Nighrenah have been released after sentencing. The district attorney’s office has released a statement announcing the sentencing for the two celebrities after their involvement with illegal narcotic drug trading. Both have been fined an undisclosed amount, were sentenced to community betterment projects and have been assigned parole officers.

The Bardic Extravaganza schedule has been updated! Kami Kami Kameleon will be performing tonight and tomorrow night The Winds of Change will take the stage. The contest ends early this year due to two troupes being removed from the schedule. All of the members Meadowlark’s Travelling Circus have been arrested. Banned from Squalor’s two surviving members have conceded after the death of their songstress, Mirella.

Banned from Squalor has donated the funds raised during their drive to resurrect Mirella to a local orphanage instead. Rumor has it that the siren had refused to return to life despite clerical interventions on her behalf.

Shayla’s Thoughts

The goal is ever moving. How can the Hesh guide his followers with such a drifting target? As I find myself nearing the battlefield to save the world from a prophecy of doom, the task changes. We are to recover the scrolls and then deliver them across the region. But first there are tasks that my party wishes to complete. Tiny and unimportant errands that they demand we deal with.

How irritating it is that they have chosen their own selfish desires over the salvation of all people! Why are we not riding with haste? Why do we drink and make merry in town? Why do we bother to stop and interfer with minor matters along the road. I swear, if this group of “heroes” continues to slow me down, I may strike them down myself and complete the final task alone.

•Irella’s family homestead burned to the ground when she was but a toddler. Her uncle, Nadoin, rescued her from the fire.

•Irella grew up with Nadoin on the road and learned much of her worldly knowledge from him.

•Irella does not know where she was born or where her family homestead was located. It was many years ago and her uncle rarely spoke of home before he died.

•Nadoin once told Irella that there was Elven heritage in her father’s family but that the elven ancestor was from so long ago that it was hardly worth mentioning.

•Irella has travelled to see this “Great City beneith a cloud from three waterfalls”

Friends

Bagarth – A roguish human who travels the roads, sings songs and keeps Irella company on the road now and then. He tends to travel with caravans, selling his services as a scout and woodsman.

Riyah – A shy elven slave that Irella saved from a cruel master and dispicable living conditions at a outlaying farm.

Vantar – A mercenary and bounty hunter seeking revenge for the stolen diamond that Bagarth liberated from his possession. He and Irella have had several run-ins.

Complete Campaign – Lessons Learned Along the Way, Part 4

After finishing up the first campaign that I’ve intentionally completed, I have contemplated the lessons learned.  This was the most character driven and story intensive game I had ever run.  Today I’m covering the Audio and Visual aids that made the campaign feel more real.

Music!

Battle music consisted mostly of movie sound tracks.  Since the Conan The Barbarian movie sound track simply rocks, that was queued up the most often for serious combat encounters.

Bard music was a must for the taverns.  Deathsong had her own music.  I used the songs by ……… for my vampire bard npc.  Every time this music came on, it became apparent that Deathsong had taken the stage.  There was a small bit of electric guitar on a track or two, but I joked that it was a magic guitar.  It also matched her miniature pretty well.

A few well placed howls announced the arrival of werewolf antagonists.

There was some generic “exploration and dark mystery” music that I used throughout the game as background music.

Visuals!

The large Chessex Battlemat that I bought worked great.  It was so quick and easy to use.  Along with the Reaper Mini’s that I had painted, the battlemat gave combat and encounters some much needed spacial structure.

I made ancient letters, notes and scrolls for the game.  These were NOT a big hit with either my player in the solo game or the players in the group Ravenloft game.  I was surprised.  Most of the time players would briefly look at a letter and hand it right back.  I had wanted them to be excited about the clues in the letters and keep them with their character sheets but they just didn’t drum up any enthusiasm.

There are two more parts to this series, coming soon!

• Tall Tales – Why not let the character do that?

• Epic Endings – How to make the final game memorable.
